According to former president Olusegun Obasanjo, he once opposed Professor Chukwuma Soludo's desire to become governor of Anambra State.
Obasanjo said he had doubts when his former Chief Economic Adviser came him and said he was vying for the gubernatorial seat in the state of Anambra. Obasanjo was speaking in Awka, the capital of Anambra State, at an event to commemorate Soludo's first year in office. According to the former president, Soludo was more suited for "something international or national" than governor of Anambra.
"After my encounter with Chukwuma, I had him in mind for a more significant role until one day he approached me and announced his intention to run for governor of Anambra. I did not try to hide my rage at him. "I told Chukwuma, the governor of Anambra, that I needed to meet him for a national or international matter.
"Who is this Anambra governor? You recalled one morning when we were together and I came for the morning prayers and I said let us pray for the incoming governor of Anambra? I snapped and said, "What prayer are you making? ", and he responded, "What prayer are you making?
Governor of Anambra state, Charles SoludoDr. (Chris) Ngige and Uba, according to Obasanjo, were his first encounters with Anambra. Then, you won't hold me accountable for my response. He said Soludo made him think about what he had stated at the time. Obasanjo continued, "I responded, oh yes, I remember. Currently serving as the minister of labor and employment, Ngige presided over Anambra from 2003 to 2006.
On May 27, 2007, Emmanuel Uba (Andy Uba) was chosen and sworn in as the governor of Anambra State. On June 14, 2007, a ruling from the Supreme Court resulted in his removal. For 14 days, he presided over the state.
"I asked Chukwuma, "What do you expect when people like you are fleeing away? People like him shouldn't complain because hooligans will take over.
He said that Soludo's performance proved what he had previously told the governor. You haven't disappointed me, and I think you haven't disappointed the people of Anambra State, according to what I've heard and seen, said Obasanjo.
Former Central Bank of Nigeria Governor Soludo presided over the institution from 2004 to 2009, including throughout Obasanjo's administration.
