Alex Otti, the incoming governor of Abia State, stated that those attempting to misconstrue his claim that he and his friend Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labor Party, had previously won an election while they were not affiliated with the same party, are unaware of the depth and virility of their relationship, which he described as indestructible and everlasting
He was quoted as stating, "I had won election in the past without Peter Obi," in a trending article. Otti responded by calling the article "headline-induced media exaggeration" meant to drive traffic to social media and stir up unwarranted controversies that would keep supporters occupied.
"Obi knows and understands my personality, and knows that I hold him in the highest regard, so he will be laughing at whoever twisted my statement in a way that would make it appear as though I was disparaging him, " he said.
"The reason I came dangerously close to losing the APGA gubernatorial ticket in Abia in 2019 was because I had the gall to publicly defend Obi after I produced facts and evidence to show that he had left the money he professed to have left behind in the coffers of Anambra while exiting duty as governor. This was in opposition to the then-Anambra State government's denial.
"Once more, Obi and his leadership style were praised in my Thisday column from June 8, 2020, with the caption, "The Triumph of Profligacy Over Prudence.
There was no better way to demonstrate that my love, support, and respect of Okwute have nothing to do with politics at the time that we were not in the same party. Because he is wiser than me and is aware of the motivations behind people who are disseminating the distorted version of my interview, I'm confident he would be chuckling at this story.
"Peter Obi and I have a strong relationship, so those trying to use a news headline to hide the truth of my equivalent submission—which was made to answer a question and explain that, aside from the massive impacts of the Obi wave, we are on the ground in Abia and had won elections twice in the past—are either being misled or are blatantly malicious—are outright deceitful."
In response to a query about whether the Obi wave helped him win the election, the LP governor-elect stated that he triumphed in 2015 and 2019, both of which were stolen. In 2015, his party also gained nearly half of the House of Assembly members, a body in which the PDP had consistently won all of the seats since 1999.
He was attempting to convey the importance of staying on the ground and working hard rather than anticipating triumph on the crest of a wave. He also stated that when he joined the Labour Party, he was not anticipating the Obi wave because he didn't know Peter was joining until a week later.
"These are verifiable factual statements," he said.
